I don't know if very many if any have heard of this site. I received an email this AM from [UnivAdm] Iowa Flood Center Resources for UI Community or IFIS. The site covers nearly 275 locations across the State. well here is a copy of the email. I am sure many of you will find it useful.
Iowa Flood Center Resources
The Iowa Flood Center (IFC) of IIHR- Hydroscience & Engineering, the College of Engineering, has an online tool, the Iowa Flood Information System (IFIS), available to all Iowans to access community-based flood conditions including current stream and river levels at nearly 275 US Geological Survey and IFC gauges across the state.
To access IFIS, go to
http://ifis.iowafloodcenter.org. From this page, users may launch IFIS, or view a brief tutorial on how to use IFIS.
The Iowa Flood Information System (IFIS), developed by the Iowa Flood Center, is a user-friendly online application based on a Google Maps-interface. IFIS displays up-to-the-minute community-specific information on rainfall, stream levels, and more, including:
- Real-time stream levels at nearly 275 locations in Iowa;
- Current flood warnings;
- Real-time rainfall maps displaying current conditions and past rainfall accumulation; and
- Flood inundation maps for select communities including Cedar Rapids, Charles City, Elkader, Iowa City, Hills, Mason City and Waterloo/Cedar Falls.
IFIS also provides links to National Weather Service forecasts at USGS gauges where forecasts are made, including the USGS gauge in Iowa City.
Note that Iowa River levels in Iowa City are controlled in part by releases from the Coralville Reservoir. However, local streams in the Iowa City area also contribute to flows in the Iowa River and are prone to flash flooding.
The Iowa Flood Center is part of IIHR--Hydroscience & Engineering, a research institute based at the University of Iowa's College of Engineering. The IFC was established in 2009 to provide accurate, state-of-the-science-based information to help Iowans better understand their flood risks. It is the nation's first academic center devoted solely to the study of floods. More information can be found on the Iowa Flood Center website at
